The New Mom Gifts They Really Want

People absolutely love buying gifts to celebrate the arrival of a new baby. In fact, chances are, most new parents have a steady queue of friends and family desperate to meet the new arrival within minutes of them returning home.

As lovely as it can be to be showered with gifts, there are only so many sleepsuits, bibs and booties that a new mom can receive before becoming a little bit overwhelmed. If you’re visiting a new mom for the first time, why not take them a gift that they’ll really want – the kind of gift that they’re unlikely to ask for, but will be really gratefully received?

Here are some thoughtful gifts that new moms would certainly appreciate:

  1.  A stylish yet practical flask

One thing us parents will know for sure, is that with a newborn baby on the scene, the chances of drinking a hot coffee is virtually nil. At times it can feel like your baby has superhuman senses, waking almost the instant you’ve finished topping up your mug. A flask can be an affordable yet welcome gift for a new mom, allowing them to make up a hot drink and keep it warm for hours, no matter how much later they get to enjoy it.

  1.  A home cooked meal

If you’re a dab hand in the kitchen, why not take the pressure off the new parents by bringing them a home cooked meal? In the newborn baby haze, the mere thought of preparing, cooking and washing up after a home cooked dinner can feel like an impossible task. As such, it can be all too easy to rely on takeaways or snacks in between nursing, napping and comforting their baby.

Cook up a nourishing and comforting dinner such as cottage pie, sausage tray bake or chilli to take round with you when you visit. With the option to simply heat up and serve when they’re ready, they’ll be over the moon when tucking in later that evening.

  1.  A breastfeeding-friendly snack

If a new mom is breastfeeding, having nutritious snacks on hand can be a great way to boost their energy levels at the end of a sleep deprived day.

Breastfeeding friendly snacks such as flapjacks or protein balls (either shop bought of homemade) are  not only a great way to encourage lactation, but can be dipped into whenever her energy levels start to flag.

  1.  A robe/loungewear

New parents see more than their fair share of the early hours, with many new moms waking regularly through the night to nurse, comfort or change their newborn baby. In the winter months in particular, having comfortable clothing that keeps them warm and cosy whilst in and out of their bed is an absolute must.

Why not treat her to some nursing-friendly loungewear, fleece lined yoga pants or a generously sized wrap style robe?  During those 2 am wake ups with a cold chill in the air, she will be so thankful to be snuggled up warm.

  1.  Take eldest child out for the day / babysit

Juggling a newborn with another child can be really challenging, with many new moms feeling incredibly guilty that they can’t give their eldest the same attention they may be used to receiving.

Why not offer to take their eldest child out for the day – take a trip to the movies, head out for their favourite ice cream or even host a fun sleepover with snacks? Helping a new mom to rest whilst their baby sleeps, knowing their eldest is safe and happy, can be worth its weight in gold.

  1. Take photos

Are you confident behind the lens? New parents love taking photos of the new arrival, but all too often they are the ones behind the lens rather than in front of it. If you have a good quality camera, why not offer to take some candid family photos of the whole family together?

Professional shots are all well and good, but sometimes the informal snapshots which capture the every day moments are the most meaningful, and something they can cherish forever.

  1.  A subscription

As a new mom it can at times feel like you’re stuck to the couch feeding for 99% of the day. A subscription can be a great gift to help pass the time, whilst also helping them stay awake during the early hours. Whether your gift allows them to binge watch box sets on Netflix, listen to the latest release audio books or simply downloading a free book onto their kindle, it’s sure to get loads of use during those early days at home with their baby.

  1.  A selfcare bundle

When looking after a new addition, it’s fair to say selfcare sometimes goes out of the window. Ensure the new mom gets a little bit of time for themselves by creating a DIY selfcare bundle. From some soothing lip balm and hand cream to a calming lavender pillow spray, practical dry shampoo to some warm and fluffy socks, pick and choose the products you know she’ll love the most. You can even throw in a bar or two of chocolate as well.

What new mom gifts did you appreciate the most?
