Maternal mRNA storage
In the early embryo, cells are so busy dividing that they don’t have time to make mRNA templates for the proteins they need. Instead, the egg cell makes all of these mRNAs beforehand and stores them in a just-discovered protected compartment outside of the mitochondria. The study was done in mice, but the same compartment was found in human oocytes. Read more here.
