Dr. Smita Gopinath

Dr. Smita Gopinath was just named a Searle Scholar, winning a $30,000 grant for her groundbreaking studies of the microbiome-immune interactions in the vaginal mucosa. This is a place where the microbiome, immune cells, and pathogens all mix, so she is using it as a system to study how our immune systems determine whether to resist or tolerate infections. Dr. Diana Gitig has a Ph.D. in cell biology and genetics from Cornell University, and has been writing about issues in biology – from molecular biology to cancer to immunology to neuroscience to nutrition to agriculture - for the past fifteen years. She has three teenaged children.
