“Feed Her When She’s Hungry.” But When is That, Exactly?
The Insight Study helps parents decipher their baby’s cries so they can respond appropriately, feeding the baby only when she is hungry and not to soothe other distresses. Babies will calm down when fed a sweet liquid regardless of why they were crying in the first place; but if they learn to associate food with solace, this can cause obesity later in their lives. Read more here.
This is important for you because it can be very, very difficult to know what your baby wants when she is screaming and you are exhausted. Any tools to help you figure out what she wants are valuable.
Alysia Montaño Ran The 800-Meter USATF Outdoor Championships – 5 Months Pregnant
This 31-year-old Olympic runner from Queens, New York, even beat her 2014 time by nearly 11 seconds. She was eight months pregnant for that race. Alysia said that “running like a girl doesn’t mean you have to run soft or you have to run dainty. It means that you’re strong.” Read more, and see gorgeous pictures of Alysia running, here.
This is important for you because yeah, you’re pregnant. You’re heavier than usual and tired. So what? You can do it!!
MgSO4 for Fetal Neuroprotection
Magnesium sulfate is known to decrease the rates of cerebral palsy in fetuses delivered before 32 weeks’ gestation, but the optimal dose has not yet been established. A new study has determined it more effectively, and strongly recommends that it be implemented. Read more here.
This is important for you because if you go into preterm labor, you might want to consider MgSO4 to cut the risk of cerebral palsy.
Testing of Placental Tissues Can Diagnose Zika
Infection with Zika during pregnancy can cause birth defects, but it is not always easy to determine if a mother is infected. New work at the CDC has shown that testing at risk babies right after birth can identify those who may be infected and should be further monitored. Read more here.
This is important for you because if you’re not sure if you may have contracted Zika while pregnant, your baby can be tested right after birth.
Car Seats Are Generally Not Used Properly
In order to keep babies safe during a collision, car seats must be used properly; they must be properly affixed to the car, and the baby must be properly strapped in. Children under two years of age should be rear facing. Celebrities often get busted misusing car seats because they are constantly photographed by paparazzi, but mere mortals misuse them just as much. Your local police station can probably help you install your car seat appropriately. Read more about celebs here, and find out about police installation here.
This is important for you because a car seat can’t protect your baby if it’s not used correctly.
